Train the Trainer Part 3: Recording 101

Hello!

Welcome to Part 3 of the Train the Trainer course series where you are going to learn about the recording process for audio and video content. In this training course, we will go over how to record your own content.

As this course gets into a fair amount of technical information, it is recommended that instructors only participate in the course if they are sure they intend to record their own content. We also recommend sticking to the sections relevant to the type of recording you are planning on doing. If you will be recording screen capture and audio, you only need to view those relevant sections. If you will be recording using a variety of cameras and audio sources, it is probably best to go through the complete course.

We will be talking about different camera types and ways of recording your screen, ranging from least to most complicated. There are many different kinds of cameras out there, all with varying degrees of control and quality that must be considered. You will likely have access to some of these cameras already and it is recommended to only use the ones you are familiar with.

Which camera you use is also informed by the manner in which you are planning to record your course. If you intend to record audio and screen capture, the most you might want is a webcam. If you are recording live demonstration content anything from a phone to a DSLR is preferred.

In the later sections of this course, we’ll go over how to set up for shooting and best practices for video and audio recording. We will be covering everything from how to frame a shot to the specific technical settings you will want to use. We have a fairly standardized look for our lectures, so if you follow our advice your course will look great!

We hope this course will make you comfortable with at least one of the many ways to record your content and most importantly help you have fun while doing it.

Here are a few things to keep in mind:

  • You do not need to follow every step in this course. You can choose to record with just one of the recording options presented here

  • Pick the recording option that makes sense for you by considering what equipment you already have and are familiar with
