Overview

This is the second installment of the series 'Dementia and Rehabilitation'. You can take each course individually, or choose to do them all!

This online course will focus on assessment, exercise prescription, and engagement strategies for people living with dementia in the community. It will review the current recommendations from the literature and provides practical suggestions for their implementation.

This online course is geared towards professionals providing home visits but anyone interested in improving their knowledge of rehabilitation for dementia populations is welcome.  

 

This course includes:

  1. An overview of outcome measures and assessments validated in the community
  2. Current recommendations for exercise prescription
  3. Engagement strategies for clients with cognitive impairment
  4. Colourful language
  5. A long distance high five to celebrate surviving the last year

 

This course does not include:

  1. Testimonials from clients
  2. Stories of super awkward home visits where everything went sideways
  3. PPE or COVID-19 information
  4. Baby animal photos
The instructors
Deborah Hawkins
Super Nerd, MScPT, BSc(KIN)
Deborah Hawkins is a registered physiotherapist with a decade of experience in Seniors Wellness. Her current practice focuses on dementia rehabilitation, falls prevention and palliative care. Beginning her career in home care, Deborah transitioned to long-term care where she currently works as an educator and front-line clinician. Her team recently received a CABHI Spark Grant to produce high intensity exercise programs for people with mid to late stage dementia.

Dr. Caitlin McArthur
PhD, MScPT, BSc (KIN)

Dr. Caitlin McArthur is an assistant professor in the School of Physiotherapy at Dalhousie University. Her research focuses on improving the effectiveness of and access to rehabilitation for people living with chronic health conditions across the continuum of care, particularly home and long-term care. She is interested in fall and fracture prevention and improving functional mobility.

With a passion to improve mobility and quality of life of clinically complex older adults, Dr. McArthur is a lead instructor of the continuing education course Bone Fit™ hosted by Osteoporosis Canada which teaches exercise professionals about safe movements, physical activity, and exercise for people with osteoporosis (www.bonefit.ca).
