Course 1: Bladder Health Matters in Low Back Pain

Bladder health and LBP are highly comorbid.  Dufour et al (2018) demonstrated that when women presented with LBP to an orthopaedic practice, 95% of them self-reported pelvic health issues.  At the forefront of this was overactive bladder symptoms.

Overactive bladder symptoms involve frequency and urgency, and can include urge incontinence as part of the diagnosis.  Bladder Pain Syndrome is on the other end of that spectrum, where frequency and urgency are combined with pain.  Both of these conditions can be affected by the spine.  When LBP is comorbid with these bladder conditions, special care and attention needs to be placed on a whole person, biopsychosocial approach.

Learning to screen for bladder health issues in your LBP patients will broaden your perspective and allow you to address the whole person in a person-centered approach.

Join Jilly Bond and Carolyn Vandyken for the first course in this series which will focus on bladder health.
