Overview

The role of the physiotherapist in Cystic Fibrosis (CF) care has evolved since CF was first identified.

This online course will review the cause, prevalence, pathophysiology, and complications of Cystic Fibrosis.

Physiotherapists have long been regarded as core care providers in helping individuals with CF delay the progression of lung disease. As the understanding for CF grew, medical advances aimed at treating the symptoms of this multisystemic disorder continued to slow down the progressive nature of CF. Meanwhile, the median age of survival continues to climb.

Physiotherapists play a core role in addressing musculoskeletal concerns, developing and evaluating new airway clearance techniques, assisting patients with their inhalation therapies, and collaborating with the interdisciplinary team daily to optimize patient care.

Research in CF has also paved the way for new research in other chronic lung diseases. Most recently, new therapies such as Trikafta, aimed to correct the CF defect on a molecular level looks promising and will hopefully improve the quality of life and prolong survival for those living with CF.

By equipping physiotherapists with the latest evidence, understanding the impairments, and the rationale of various treatment tools, this session will guide practitioners on evolving treatment strategies and home programs.

This online course is brought to you by the Canadian Physiotherapy Association.
